The Edinburgh Short Film Festival opens again on October 27th and once again screens superlative short films across the city this Autumn!
We’re excited to be working in partnership with Puppet Animation Scotland (PAS) who champion innovation in visual theatre, puppetry and animation, supporting the creative and technical development of theatre practitioners and engaging with audiences through its two annual festivals, the manipulate Visual Theatre Festival and the Puppet Animation Festival. Each year the latter event presents a diverse programme of children’s puppetry performances, animated films and workshops throughout Scotland every Easter.
In partnership with PAS, we’re delighted to be able to offer the 1st Best Animated Short Film prize at this year’s ESFF and the winner will be announced at our closing night on November 11th!
Animation lovers will also be delighted to learn that we are holding a night of Iberian animated films curated by
Mecal – Barcelona Int. Short Film & Animation Festival who have put together a programme of outstanding Spanish & Catalan animated short film as well as a clutch of award-winning animations spread across the festival as a whole!
From USA we’re screening the Remi Award winning short ‘The Expedition’ by Indiana-based artist and film-maker, Damon Mohl, we also have the moody and intricately designed gothic animation
‘The Escape’ by Jaroslaw Konopka, a pogrom in a nameless European country leaves a woman and her child desperate to survive.
From Austria, the delightful and intricate stop-motion cityscape of ‘Vienna Table Trip’ is by the multi-talented and Oscar nominated film-maker, Virgil Widrich and we’re also home to the UK Premiere of Gabriel Böhmer’s ‘Beetle Trouble’ impressionist drawings combine with stop-motion and mixed media to present a deeply unsettling and nightmarish vision of domesticity, amid scuttling beetles and talking cats!
Multi award winning animation ‘Schirkoa’ by Ishan Shukla tells a darkly noir-esque story set in the city of Bag-heads, a senate member faces a tough choice between political career, brothels and love for a mysterious woman. Beautifully rendered and imagined streetscapes – and characters – are partly why this film won Best Animated Short at the Texas International Film Festival,Venice Film Week & American Movie Awards.
Fresh from the Busan International Short Film Festival and Arizona International Film Festival, Seung Hee Kim’s extraordinary stop-motion ‘The Realm of Deepest Knowing’ is replete with Zen philosophy amid tumbling cubes and proto-humans.
Winner of Best Animation Award at our partners Fastnet Film festival and straight from
Clermont-Ferrand Intl Short festival and Flickers Rhode Island Intl Film Fest 2017 Robin Joseph’s visually arresting tale of pursuit and longing, ‘Fox and the Whale’ follows a curious fox who goes in search of an elusive whale.
